What is Depression?
Depression is defined as two weeks of consistent sadness or apathy, TWO WEEKS! In our society it is undoubtable that we will all face depression, whether directly or indirectly, in our lives. There are 3 types of depression:
Statistics show that 1 in 13 people in New York City are diagnosed with depression. Unfortunately, the prevalent attitude in society is that Depression is a personal weakness, causing depressed individuals to be too ashamed to seek the necessary treatment they need because they believe this disease must be a solitary battle. As a result only 1/2 the population will actually seek help! Due to the stigma our society carries about Depression; that if you are depressed you are crazy, weak, an outcast.......NO this is wrong! Together we must work to clear up this stigma because this should not be a solitary battle but rather one shared by loved ones. We can help those facing this tough battle by simply being more understanding, and listening...these simple actions could help make the difference in someone's life. |
